Other Than traditional Cake

I am in the early planning of my wedding, but am planning it myself. It`s overwhelming at times. One thing I am thinking is that I don`t want a traditional cake. Anyone ever tried anything else that was unique and turned out great? I am thinking of desert table or something with choices. Thanks

I have seen where people make cookies and place them on a three tier stand that resembles a cake. You could still decorate the top level with a cake topper or flowers ect. You can make your own stand by cutting out three circles from plywood (a smaller, a medium and then a larger one for the bottom layer) and separating the layers by using upside down terracotta pots and painting the pots and circles white or the color of your choice. You may want to hot glue the circles to the pots to secure them. Also you could put ribbon, satin ribbon roses or rope beading on the edges of the circles...Be creative!!

You could also use cupcakes, muffins,
Bak Lava (sp?) or anything else that you can think of on the circles.

Hope this inspired you some.

We don`t like cake so we are thinking of a small one just for cutting. My family is REALLY BIG on cheesecake and ice cream cake so we are considering those as well. My theme is fans and I found a fan shaped cookie cutter online so we are going to do those as well
We are not tradiotional people and are trying not to have too much tradition in our wedding but also not to offend some of our traditional and "slightly" conservative guest. We are planning and paying for own as well and are not getting married until 10/13/2006 but we have been engaged since 12/6/1996! Talk about a lot of planning time!

Perhaps it would be fun to make and decorate your own cake. Thats what I`m doing for our wedding which is Jan of 05. Its less expensive than traditional cakes and it would totally compliment yours and your fiances personalities and taste.

You could try the Martha Stewart cupcake tower.

Or a large cheesecake, decorated with lots of fresh fruit.

I love the idea Shelle had. I am doing a garden wedding in May.
I am using terra cotta pots as centerpieces w/ gerberas planted in them. The cake idea will tie it all together! I just wish I could get a picture of the cake she described. Are there any out there??? Thanks!

I`m not sure if this is what you mean or not, but my parents found a cake decorator who was willing to let them design their own cake, and then took 10% off the cost because it was their own design. The pattern that they designed became this lady`s biggest selling wedding cake. They were able to save money by doing that. I hope this idea helps you or maybe someone else.

For my 2nd wedding (his too) we had a dear friend of his family make a BEAUTIFUL red velvet cake! It was in the shape of a heart with really yummy cream cheese icing I think....and it had a lilttle heart cake like it on the top we froze. It had two doves on it and some netting and a few flowers.

My husband`s favorite cake is cheesecake, and since he let me do everything else I wanted in the planning of our wedding, I wanted him to be able to have the cake he wanted. You cannot layer cheesecake (which we did not know until we started telling people we wanted cheesecake). So we ended up having 5 graduated sizes of 1 layer cheesecakes on cake stands decorated with fall leaves as our theme was fall. They looked beautiful and everyone thought it was great because it was different. Good Luck with your planning!
