Honeymoon In Egypt

My fiance proposed to me in Egypt in September 2003 - he got a round of applause from the reception staff at the hotel we were staying in.

We`re from the UK and were going at the height of the war in Iraq, which is what I assume the first reply was hinting at - the situation being dangerous. Well, we found everyone in Egypt so kind. Security is tight and you`ll see armed guards at every hotel reception with airport scanners - don`t be put off, they`re there to protect you and are happy to get to know you and advise you. Use their knowledge of the safer places to go.

One thing I will say is be prepared for people to approach you to try to sell to you on the street - just be polite but firm. The Egyptians are a gentle people and will take the hint if you say "no thank you" often enough.

Also, if you say "I promise" to an Egyptian, they assume you mean it - so if you "promise" to come back the next day to buy something they will keep the stall open all day waiting for you - don`t let them down or don`t make the promise in the first place. We promised a taxi driver that we would use him for a return journey - he waited in the blazing heat for two hours and was so happy to see us as so many foreign visitors had let him down in the past.

Have a wonderful honeymoon.
