Bridal Shower Invitation

I received an invitation for a bridal shower. I have never met the bride, have only met the groom once, but am a friend of his mothers. I was surprised to get the invitation, especially because the Shower is 4 hours away from where I live. It requests an RSVP. Is just calling to say I will not attend enough? Am I still expected to send a gift?
