Cash Bar

I just wanted to get your opinions. My fiance and I are paying for everything for our wedding from start to finish. I am not asking for any help from anyone.
I was talking to my neighbor about the wedding plans and she asked if we were going to have a cash bar at the reception. I have never heard of this. I have never been to a wedding were there was a cash bar. Is this a new thing or not at all.
Just wondering because I have never thought about it or heard about it.

I don`t think I`d have a problem with a cash bar either. As long as drinks were not served, only made available to those who want them.

Yes you are serving them. If you make it available then it`s being served. It`s the same bar where they will go to get the soda or other drinks that you are paying for. If you want to compare it with serving a meal then it would be like serving a buffet and everyone can have as much chicken and rice and veggies as they like but the crabcakes sitting on the same buffet they must pay for themselves if they choose to have some.
