Bands Or Dj
If you do no i`m having my quinceanera at the civic center in palmetto fl. Its pretty big and i dont know to just get a dj because they play everything or just get a band because the place is kinda big to have just a dj, but then my boyfriend said he would help me play the dj by paying for half of it and its like $400 and the band is $1600 i dont know what to get because i kinda want just a dj because its cheaper but then people will talk and my parents want me to have a band so i dont know any advice?

In My Humble Opinion: You should have both!
Sounds like money is no object. A band will only play 3 Hours at the most, and that way you can have a DJ open up and play during cocktails, have the band play during the main dancing and have your DJ play during the band breaks.
I get lots of calls from places like Los Angeles, Dallas, to appear with my CD`s and CD Mixer. Normally I just hook up to the band`s system since they already have an AMP. I only charge half.
I`m sure you`ll find a local DJ who will be able to do that for you.
Good LUCK! To bad Im in California otherwise I would do it.

Also,
(I don`t mind sharing with other fellow dj`s)
Plan ahead of time, a music program, for example (depending on your regional nationality, it will be different, let`s pretend your parents are from:
Mexico - This could be:
Michoacan,
D F (chilangolandia)
Guadalajara
Veracruz
Monterrey
Ciudad Juarez
Tijuana
Sinaloa
ETC...ETC...ETC
Or if the are from
CUBA
EL SALVADOR
NICARAGUA
PUERTO RICO
PANAMA
COLOMBIA
GUATEMALA
....OR MIXED!!!!!
OR EVEN GRINGUITOS!!!
OR MEXICAN AMERICAN: (MEANING CHICANO, TEJANO, POCHO,.....)
SO, DEPENDING OF WHERE, HOW, WHAT, WHEN THEY LIKE THEIR MUSIC that`s how a DJ should play.
I will give you an example: I just did a quinceanera for a young lady who is the daughter of a first generation Salvadorean lady, married to a second generation PR/Mex gentleman who consider himself a "low rider".
Talk about a mixture! So I played the following dancing sets after the waltz and all of the formalities:
SETS IN MINUTES.......TYPE OF MUSIC
15 mins.....................Merengue
15 mins.....................Salsa
20 mins....................Old School / Oldies
30 mins..................Hip Hop
---------restart rotation
15 mins................cumbia
15 mins................rock en espanol
20 mins................NY salsa
15..mins..............Banda/Latin House
15 mins...............Hip Hop / R&B
15 mins ................Old School HIp Hop
==========Bu then everyone is begging for mercy! I was pumping at least 4,000 WATTS!!! WITH INTELLIGENT LIGHTING SYSTEM! in a GYM-like hardwood floor hall...
Then I threw down with some hard core CORRIDOS!! even the sophisticated salsa-boys got down on the dance floor to dance some Lupillo style corridos with some TAMBORA.
And the fun continued for SIX LONG HOURS UNTIL MIDNIGHT. I received threats that night for stopping the music at 12! LOL!! needless is to say, no one wanted to leave! there were still around 150 people out of the 300 they started with...Even the viejitos had a piece of the action.
Bottom line: A good DJ will throw it in the MIX and keep it non-stop, depending on what GUEST & BIRTHDAY GIRL WANTS.
