Destination Weddings

My only daughter wants to have her wedding at the beach in North Carolina. We live in CT and she lives in VA. We do not think friends and family will make the trip. Her father and I will pay the entire tab for the wedding. How much say do we have on where the wedding is held?

Hi JoAnn,

I am not an expert on this, but just thought my opinion would help. I have planned for a bigger wedding with at least 300 people for the past year. At first, I wanted a smaller wedding where my family would travel somewhere else. My fiance and I decided then on the bigger wedding and it would be held in his town, which is 3 hours from my house. That is not a terrible drive, but I knew that I would lose a lot of people having it there, rather than in my home town. Just recently, he wanted to push the wedding back, so I cancelled EVERYTHING. Now I am thinking about having a smaller wedding. As for your daughter, how many people are being invited to the wedding? I think a destination wedding is great, but as long as you don`t expect a lot of people to be there. I would expect close family members to travel, but that`s about it. That would be my goal with traveling somewhere for a smaller wedding if I now decide to do that...I would just like my family and my FH`s family there and I would be just as happy as if we had 300.
That is a good question about how much say you have...so you could start with mentioning to her maybe that you don`t know that a lot of people will actually come. In my situation, my parents are paying as well, and my dad has been very vocal about certain things because he is tight with his money and wants to make sure it is well spent! haha....I don`t think it would hurt to just let her know how you feel.
