I will be inviting a dentist to the wedding. When addressing the invitation is it proper to use DDS (ie John Doe, DDS)?

I believe that would be proper or you can address it Dr.

Using DDS would not be correct for a wedding invitation. You would use it for professional situations, not social. Use Dr. For the invitation.
