GETTING MARRIED And Now UNEMPLOYED

I was recently laid off before Thanksgiving. My soon to be husb and I planned to pay for our wedding ourselves. Now its just him. He says not to worry, but I wanted this to be a FAIRYTALE WEDDING (don`t we all?). Even though I have been married before, my parents at that time were out of the country, and noone from my side of the family attended my (homemade) wedding. Now, they are here living close to me and so is the rest of the family. So this is really my 1st wedding and I wanted it to be elegant and very special. I need some help on ideas from start to finish. Everywhere I look it is $$$$$$. I guess I want a champagne wedding on a beer (more like water) budget.
I feel very guilty, having him pay for everything....
SOMEONE please HELP>>>>THANKS IN ADVANCE

Kay,
Your finances will be joined after the wedding (I`m assuming) , but I suppose that line of thinking isn`t helping much. Money issues aren`t easy before or after marriage. Although I can understand that you would feel guilty about not paying your share of the wedding expenses you can pull together a beautiful wedding that falls within your budget. You just need to be willing to work really hard.
When I am working with any bride, but especially a bride with a limited budget, we go over what your top 3-5 priorites are in the wedding. Do you have to have particular flowers, location, caterer ect. And we really focus on the top priorities. Focus on the things that are really going to be important to you and your fiance and be willing to give on the things that are further down on the priority list.
If you have family close to you and they won`t or can`t contribute money do you think they would be interested in donating their time to make your wedding exactly what you want? There are a few really good books out there about catering your own wedding, doing your own flowers and ways to make your wedding special without spending a lot of money. You would definitely need a team of family and friends who you would feel comfortable asking to help out with various aspects of the wedding. Do you have friends or family that have talents or interests in cake decorating, catering, photography, floral arrranging? There are tons of ideas on this website -search for cheap weddings or inexpensive ideas ect.
I am a wedding coordinator so if you want some more moneysaving tips email me or if you want the titles of those books. ( I can find most of them at my local library.) I wish you luck on your wedding and hope that you find a solution to your problem.

I am in the Summerville, SC (Dorchester County) area. We have thought about a different area, however 99% of everyone is from the Summerville area. We just don;t want to have a long distance for everyone to drive after the reception, if you know what I`m saying.
The wedding is set for July 18,2004.

I don`t know if you are on quite the tight budget I am (we have a spending cap of about $2500), but here are some things I have found out the *hard* way.

Look for beautiful settings that will serve as wedding location and reception (cuts out half of the hall rental fees if you only rent one place). Example: Historic Courthouse, City Park/Rose Garden, University Arboretum, Museum, etc.

Look for your wedding dress on Ebay. I just purchased a Casablanca dress worth $800 for $200.

Costco has great *cheap* sheet cakes (and I am a cake snob...I really wanted a $500 cake but am surprisingly satisfied with the sheet cake). Pretty one on the table, sheet cake on the plates.

Have a friend DJ.

Have an invitation making party. Buy stencils or stamps!!

Pick an inexpensive flower, I am using daisies, and order them ahead of time so you can get a discounted rate.

Good luck with your wedding!!

Dear Kay,
I think I know how you feel, I am also getting married for the second time this march in Mexico. (beach wedding).
We are in our fifties and have put this off so many times(14)years due mostly to financial situations. Money is important and we had both gone through major job losses after many years and were waiting for just the right time to marry.
Luckily we were able to plan for our future together since one of us always had a good job going. Since my fiance has lost his business , he has been advised to go on the heart transplant list. I will no longer plan my life on how much money we have in the bank. Soulmates take care of each other and it all seems to even out in the end.
I wish you all the happiness in the world and be glad that you have found a soulmate!

I have a larger budget but found most of my buys online. My fiancè is in the Navy...no worry of him losing his job. If you want little tips email me. I am having a rather formal-looking affair for 100ppl in a medieval motif for just under 9000. If I can do it anyone can. I normally charge for this advice on keen.com (hey a girl`s gotta make a living) I go to school full time, run a business, work somewhere else part-time and plan my wedding. I am willing to offer you advice FREE of charge but just hope that you will refer me to others. I am a bridal consultant but I am moving away from that to a designer/decorator and teaching brides how to "design on a dime" there are a lot of neat things out there to create the ambiance without having an abundance of flowers. I am getting married on December 5, 2004 so I totally understand where you are coming from.

Here are some great tips on how you can cut your budget:
-Substitute real flowers with silk flowers. Silk flowers look just as nice and will keep that everlasting look. Using real flowers, they will be brown by the time the ceremony is over.
-If you are having your wedding in a public garden or greenhouse, nix ordering floral centerpieces altogether since there will be flowers and trees all around you. This will save you tons of money. You will want something on the tables so have some rose petals scattered in the center of each table and a pillar candle with a few votive candles. (Remember to get unscented candles because nobody wants to smell scented candles when they are trying to eat).
-Purchase your own vases for floral centerpieces rather than buying them from the florist. Wal-Mart sells them at a low price.
-Instruct your caterer (if applicable) to set up oblong or rectangular tables that seat 12 to 14 people. This will allow you to cut down on the number of floral centerpieces you need.
-Cut down on the number of courses served and you can reduce your catering bill, which is a huge chunk of change.
-Cut the price of your cake by 50% by asking your baker to use butter cream icing instead of fondant frosting. Butter cream tastes better anyway.
-Turn your favors into artful centerpieces to eliminate the need for flowers.
-Consider asking a friend or family member with a good camera and little skill to tape the event for you. That`s what I did and they did a wonderful job. Do the same with a photographer. Everyone thinks that going through a professional you will get better results. That`s not true. A professional can mess up too! If you have a friend or family member do it, you don`t have to pay them as much or anything at all.
-Have your ceremony and reception at one location. This helps cut the cost of deposits and other fees that may be included in the contract.

I hope these tips help!! Good luck!!!

Consider a personal loan if you have the credit for it. It will build your credit when you pay it off month by month.

An easy way to cut back on a wedding budget is to rethink flowers. You can make beautiful floral arrangements and boutineers and bouquets that will last forever by going to the local craft store. Go for more useful centerpieces. For my wedding i am buying beautiful but cheap vases (a few dollars a piece) and buying colorful stones (the dollar store) and having beta fish swimming at each table. I am setting it up so people can take the fish home and i am tying a tiny ziplock with fish food to the vase with my wedding colored ribbon. Cheap and useful.
