How Much Does A Typical Weeding Cost?

I am just begining to plan a wedding. I have to pay for it myself, and was just trying to get an idea of how much it will cost me. He wants to have 100 - 130 people.

Thanks.

That will depend on what kind of wedding you want to have. Figure out the aspects that are most important to you (photographer, location, food, dress) and then go from there. If you are not into resorts or country clubs you can probably save a lot of money. Do you want it caterered or will family help make food? Sit down or buffet style? Hosted bar? Flowers? There is just so much! The one thing I recommend is to make sure you videotape the ceremony. Initially I did not like the idea of videotaping the wedding but now that it is over I think it would have been a great keepsake.

We are getting married Oct. 8, 2004, and our wedding will be right around $18,000 with honeymoon. We are having 150 people with a catered dinner at a hall, pictures, flowers, dj, the normal stuff. What state do you live in? Because I`m sure that has a lot to do with cost too.

Well, this is a loaded question...
It really does depend on the type of wedding you`re wanting, and the amount of work you want to put into it. I thought I was being fairly economical with planning a March wedding (the "off" season in Canada) but my wedding will still end up costing $25, 000 CAD, if not more for approx 200 ppl. This is with trying to be thrifty...

I just got engaged and starting looking into costs and I`m horrified!! I know people who are planning 40-50k weddings in NJ. We`ll be paying for it ourselves and there`s NO way we could do that...or would want to.
15k will probably be our max...for 75-80. Is this possible in NJ??

Hello and Congratz,
The cost depends on what you want and how big you want to go with everything. Also the cost will depend on where you live. I did the flowers for a wedding that included everything, and it was very elegant and a big todo.. And the mother of the bride said it was around 10K for everything. That included gown, bride`s maids` dress for 8 girls, tuxes, flowers, food, reception area, rentals on tents and chairs, tables, linen, silverware, china, stemware, cake, other decor, DJ and honey moon. There was around 200 people who attended the reception. I know what the flower end all was. I got in 800 roses plus other flowers for the wedding. The honey moon was a week in Florida also. However in a big city it would have been alot more. Then you have a wedding like the one I had, small and very simple and I spent around 1k all together and I had 150 people at mine.
Best thing is to check prices and decide on how big and what all that you want to have. :)

According to wedding magazines: statistically speaking, the average wedding hovers around $19k; oddly enough, I read this same figure back in 1996.

Our *entire* wedding-cost in `98 came in under $4,000; & it included a 7-course Moroccan feast for 80 guests. I could also cite ceremonies we`ve created & performed for others that cost far less.

Set a budget, code all aspects of the day in terms of "must have" through "incidentals", & then start researching. An elegant wedding doesn`t need to be costly.

Best of luck with all your planning,

I agree with a previous poster. Decide first what things are most important to you, things you just can`t compromise on, and cost those. Then go from there. You may have to eliminate some of the things at the bottom of the list. I got married in Jan. 2000 with about 100 guests, and the total cost was $7000. This included dress and all. I intentionally got married around Christmas so the church would be decorated already, made my own centerpieces, and covered an inexpensive book with decorative paper for the guest book. Once something is white and has "Wedding" written on it, it seems to be double the cost of its non-wedding counterpart, right? I think the biggest cost is a sit-down dinner. Stick to a light buffet and an open bar--people will take a couple glass of wine over room-temp chicken any day. So many people have told me this was the funnest wedding they`ve been to, and that was certainly my main goal.

I definitely think that ang is crazy..a wedding costs for more than 8000 for 200+ people. We spent around 35k for 170 people. Rented a reasonable (but not outlandish) reception hall, had moderate food, and simple decorations. I find it hard to belive that she spent that little- unless maybe she had everything for free and performed the ceremony in her backyard...

I believe that an average (semi to formal) wedding will cost between $25k to $35k. That would be for a reception hall, decorations, favors, flowers, shoes, gown, tux, transportation, hair, nails, gifts for bridal party, catering, DJ (more for a band), photographer, videographer and cake. This depends on where you live also, the price may double if you live in New York or California, could be cheaper if you live in Iowa.

I agree with Ang. I just got married in April and we spent less than $4,000. It is very possible to have a beautiful wedding for not that much! granted i am a crafty person and made my centerpieces, favors, unity candle, and flowers. But it is doable. I had a buffet dinner, and got my cake through a grocery store (which was beautiful). You just have to know were to look to get the things you want!!! I got my flower girls dresses at sears, they were easter dresses on clearance after easter. I purchased a replica maggie dress for $199 that retails for $1000. My dress is more beautiful than the maggie dress. So it doesn`t have to cost a fortune to have the wedding of yur dreams. If you want some more ideas on how to save money i have plenty. The cost of wedding are so variable....I did a top notch classy wedding for 100 guests in Hollywood California for just over 10K. I cut many corners and also Got lucky and had helping friends. My dress I was fortunate enough to go to the Jessica mcclintock outlet in orange county and found a stunning..simple elegant and classy dress no ruffles, lace or crazy trains) simple yet elegant for $86 on a clearnce rack...I spent 25$ on alternation to make it fit perfectly. My in laws did the rehersal dinner and then we got married in a stunning church (if you know Hollywood the huge one with the aids ribbon on highland and franklin) for about $800 and a friend who was a professional baker did my cake for $200 and then the ceremony was the pricey part up a Yamashiro Japanese Garden are of thier stunnign hollywood hills location top restaurant. It was about10,000 including open bar..I went to the down town flower mart and bought all my white roses and made center peices and brides maid and my own bouquets (about $200) I made all the gifts by hand and did many things I made by hand all the invitations, place cards and centerpeices....so it was a LOT of work on my end...but I did a top notch classy wedding in a gorgeous location for about 12,000...so it all deoends on how much research...corner cutting and bargins you are willing to hunt for. If you look these days so mnay are selling stunning wedding dresses (obvoislu worn once) just one of many ideas to look....
