Bridal Gowns Other Than David`s Bridal?

I live in the California Bay Area, near San Francisco (Mountain View, CA). I have heard such horrible things about David`s Bridal, I`m hesitant to even go. My wedding is in 6 months, and it`s about time I shop for a dress. I don`t want to pay more than $1000 if I can avoid it, any ideas? I need bridesmaid dresses, too, but no one seems to make violet- pastels, royale blue and plum, but not a good blue-violet.
