Reception

I read the response to cheap as possible and I have a few more questions.
If I decide to cater the wedding mysefl(my family would probably do it), what would we do about servers? We would prefer if we had somebody serve the guests so they can give reasonable portions. Where would we get servers from that we could pay a reasonable amount for? Is there a good book that shows elegant set ups for receptions?

You can provide your own food & let the guests serve themselves Buffet Style. I`ve seen this done at Weddings & it is better than having the food served to the guests because not everyone will eat the same items. We are planning to do this at our Wedding.
We`re serving Finger Foods, Potato Salad, Salads & a Variety of Dressings, Pasta Salad , Cookies Brownies,
Vegetable Trays, Meat Trays & Cheese Trays.

Tami`s suggestion is excellent -- buffets are popular and offer guests options. However, if you have your heart set on plated food, you could ask friends or family to help serve up the food. Depending on how many guests you have, it may not take that long. You could probably serve up 200 plates of food in under 1/2 hour if you get your system down pat. You could then recruit assistance from a few friends to help serve. You`ll have to chose how many serves based on how many guests you have.

You could check out some event planning books for how to set the reception site to be elegant. Also, check out the different websites to see what you can find.

Good luck!

I have the book "Cater Your Own Wedding" and it has given me invaluable advice!!!! There`s everything in there from set ups and recipes. It takes a great amount of help from friends and family, but you can pull it off!

Also, do you live by a college or University? You could put an ad in the school paper for a one time gig as a server and pay a set them a set fee depending on how many hrs they are there (or like $15/hr) I am speaking as a student...a lot of us like to earn a little extra cash once in a while and if we were to work for the actual catering company, we wouldnt get paid hardly anything..so it seems like a good deal to us!!! You could request them to all wear tux shirts or something nice and serverish.A lot of students have serving experience, so you could weed through all of your canidates (quite a few will probley respond)
