Wedding Gifts

Would it be rude to ask for money as a wedding gift?

My fiance and I are returning to work overseas for a minimum of five years after the wedding, we are renting our home out so already we have to find storage space for our belongings.

Any suggestions on HOW to ask for money in the nicest possible way!

Yep, sorry, it`s rude. And yes, all sorts of people are going to bonk me over the head for saying so, but hey, this is just my opinion, ok?

That`s what we wanted also, since we had just purchased a house. But we certainly didn`t say as much, except to tell our parents. That way if anyone asked them, they had a good answer. :) People gave us all sorts of wonderful gifts, but we also got a pretty good pile of cash too, without having to resort to putting `please bring cash` in our invitation.

Good luck!

Thanks Kimberley,
I really appreciate all advice at the moment, even though my heart sank as I read it, I suppose if were not going to be cheeky I`d better get in touch with a few storage firms!

I am kind of in the same boat.........I wasn`t going to put anything on the invites about gifts, but I am having guests RSVP by phone to my mom (very small wedding of 40 guests) - and if they asked her she was going to mention that we would appreciate money if possible........Is this acceptable or not???

Thanks so much :)

Hi again Jill!

Don`t let it get you down too much. After all, if your family knows that you`re moving overseas, then they are probably going to tell their families and friends who are attending the wedding. I`m guessing that you`ll get a lot more cash and a lot less stuff to move anyhow! :)

My wedding was last month, and even though we didn`t specifically tell our guests that we wanted money, people did approach our parents and such and asked what we needed. When they heard we had just purchased a house, many people gave money, knowing that`s what we needed the most!

So depend on your family to get the word out. When people find out that you`re moving far away, most will realize that you won`t be able to take a lot of stuff with you.

Good luck! Don`t worry, it will all work out. When is your wedding?

31st of january, it was gonna be in August 2004, but due to going overseas it has had to be brought forward, nearly got everything sorted, will have to speak to all my sisters (got 4 of them) and get the word out on the grapevine.

Thanks again.
