First, take a deep breath....
OK...I live in Halifax and just got married a month ago. I have or can probably get some of the information you need. Some questions for you:
What sort of officiant do you want? Catholic? Anglican? United? Justice of the Peace?
Do you want to be married in a church?
Where in Halifax will you be living? Do you know yet?

Wow! Thanks for your reply and congrats on your recent wedding! I would prefer to NOT have a catholic priest because they tend to be very strict about vows etc... And this makes my fiance (and myself, frankly) uncomfortable. Yes, we would like to be married in a church but have heard that you need to be a part of the church to do so. We would definitely like our ceremony to be religious in nature and tone. Any suggestions? Leann:)

Hi Leanne:
Our situation was similiar to yours, in that my husband is Catholic and I was baptized in the United Church. I didn`t want to go for the Catholic Church either; since I wasn`t brought up in it, there are traditions that I don`t understand and it makes me rather uncomfortable. Besides, many Catholic churches often require your future wife/husband to attend classes, or become Catholic. I wasn`t interested in that.
We were not members of any church when we got engaged, but started `shopping around` to find one we felt comfortable in. Then we started going on a regular basis - not just to save money or anything, we had planned to find a church to call our own anyhow.
In the United Church where we got married, you didn`t have to be a member of that church to get married there, but you did pay less if you were a regular member of the congregation. It`s much more expensive than I thought - $350 if you`re a regular part of the congregation, over $500 if you`re not. Add on $100 for a NS marriage license (which you can get up to a year in advance), $100 for a pre-marriage course through the church, and it all adds up!
Our church is Fairview United, it`s in the Fairview area of Halifax (obviously), and they do have a website, look it up on Google and you should find it fairly easily. Our minister is a wonderful person, she`s serious when she needs to be and light when necessary. I don`t know when you`re getting married, but I`d suggest you start looking for a church now, they tend to be booked far in advance. Same with reception venues.
What about your reception, any ideas on that? Why don`t you email me, we can talk that way.
