INVITATION ETIQUETTE

We are eloping in November and so far no one knows about it. We will be sending out invitations for a wedding cocktail party which will be held in January. First of all how do I let people know that it is black tie preferred without offending people who don`t own tuxes and how do I suggest that we have a gift registry?? Thanks in anticipation.

It is generally not considered appropriate to tell people you have a gift registry in your invitation. You should spread this by word of mouth.
For the black tie, you can write, "black tie preferred" in the invitation. This lets people know they need a tuxedo, without being offensive. This is how I have seen it done in the past.
If you think many of your friends don`t have a tux, you may want to reconsider holding a black tie event. People may see this as burdensome since they now need to rent a tux in addition to giving a gift.
