Gift Giving Ettiquette

The amount you choose to give has nothing to do with whether you went to the wedding or not. Nor does it have anything to do with what they gave you at your own wedding. Give what you can afford to give graciously.

Some cultures give according to how much they think it (reasonably) cost the bride and groom to have them there at the wedding. So if you don`t come to the wedding, of course you can take that into consideration in deciding how much to give. Whenever I give a gift, I do take into consideration what the couple gave me (I try to match it if I can afford it) and whether or not I plan on attending (for reason stated above). Also take into consideration how close you are to the couple. Of course you want to give within your means, but for many of us, that range is vast and taking into consideration these other factors can help you gauge what is appropriate.

The amount of money you give as a gift, has nothing to do with attending the wedding, IMO. Give whatever is in your heart to give.
