Wedding&Engagement Ring Placement

I keep seeing people wearing their rings different ways and i`ve asked my mother what way they go and she says she doesnt really know. I figure the engagement ring came first so it should stay and then wedding band goes on next. Does it really matter what way they go?? im not at to these steps yet =`( but i was just wondering
