Proposing Marriage In Brasil
I want to ask my girlfriend to marry me when i go visit her in January. She lives in Sao Paulo, Brasil. What is the custom for asking a woman to marry in Brasil? For instance, by American custom the man would likely ask the father`s permission for his daughter`s hand in marriage. Is this true in Brasil? What about the ring..should it be a diamond ring and how much should be spent? Should I get on one knee or climb a tree when I ask? How long is the typical engagement? I want everything to be perfect for her. Can anyone help me?
Also, I think we will be living in Brasil and I am wondering how an American with limited fluency in Portuguese can get a job? Does anyone know of jobs available? I have a Master`s Degree in Counseling Psychology but I`ll do anything that pays. I have to support my wife somehow...assuming she says YES!!!

Hi, I´m Brazilian and i´ve always found extremely romantic when american guys fall on their knees and propose. Well, this is not common here but since you want to do something different, I´d say, go for it!
Second, if you already know her parents, why not ask the father, may seem old fashioned but to some brazilian daddys, this could mean you really care for her and her parents, to the point of bothering to ask them their girl´s hand.
The usual engagement ring here is made of gold, and it is usually the same one worn after you get married. If you want to do the american way, again, go for it.
A typical engagement lasts the time you need to organize and prepare the wedding. Usually a year, but talk to her, if you have other plans as masters, new job, babies on the way.... It´s basically the couple´s choice.
Getting a job here is pretty hard, even for those fluent in English. Try to speed up your portuguese learning. Many people here doesn´t understand a word in English.
Congratulations and boa sorte!
Raquel
