18th Birthday Ideas??

My best friend and I want to have our 18th birthday party together but we have different opinions on theme ideas. I would like something more elegent and formal while shed like to have a nicer casual type of party. If you had any ideas that are like a happy median between these two ideas that would be wonderful! Also if you had links to supplies for your idea that would be great too. Thanks!
