With my first wedding I made tapes for all the wedding with each one clearly marked.... Seating music, ceremony, reception and made copies ( just in case).
I did this so there would be no mistakes in the music and no floundering to get the right CD in at the right time.
As far as music goes...
Use music that gets you moving and music both you and your groom enjoy. You did not say what type of wedding ( formal or not) but here are a few "can`t lose" suggestions.
OLDIES:
*Unchained Melody
*My Girl
* My Guy
*Twist and Shout ( for the fast dances)
*Heaven must be missing an Angel
*Going to the Chapel
* You are so beautiful
COUNTRY:
*I Do ( cherish you)
*I Swear
*Me and You
* Your love amazes me
The list goes on and on... Just think of the songs that touch you and reminds you of you and your groom... It will make the reception uniquely you.
Hope this helps!

If you get longer tapes ( 90 min are 45 on each side) you can do 2 or 3 and have a friend or family member in charge of changing tapes as needed. I had a dual cassette set up where when one turns off the other one begins. This gives you a full 90 mins of music then you can have the person you assign be prepared to turn them both over when the first side is done.
Sounds like a lot of I work I know, but once you get the music to tape. You get the mix you want and saves a ton of time at the reception.
Hope this helps!

Songs generally run 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. With added space in between songs prob another 5-6 minutes. I would say atleast 10. I would make one CD with songs I absolutely want at the reception and one with songs I would like but if time runs out would not be a big deal. Play the ones you do want first then switch for the end of the reception.
I would say mix 30-40 just in case. Worse comes to worse you can always replay the first ones at the end.
Hope this helps!

Our wedding is set for June 26th, and we`re doing our own music. We`ve made a list of songs we`d like (most DJ`s websites offer playlists), and we`ve borrowed the CD`s from the library (free), and ripped the songs we want onto Real Player on a playlist for our wedding. We`re going to hook up the lap top to several speakers at our hall, rent a disco ball, lights, etc. And dance our socks off! It`s a very cheap way to get the songs you like!
