She can weave raffia and toule (filmy fabric, can be used in many ways and doesn`t have to look frilly) around a banister if there is one, use autumn vegetables or darker more vibrant flowers instead of the usual. I assume she`s going for a more natural look, so use twine to tie leafy/viney bouquets with colorful accent flowers or leaves. Check out a florist or craft shop and go beyond the traditional white/light colored flowers. Use citronella torches for a lot of the lighting, and if the reception is outdoors, use as many candles as possible instead of electric light. It softens faces and gives a warm glow to everything, especially in October. You can find candles in almost any color or shape to go with any theme, just make sure they are either unscented or complimentary, gentle scents. Don`t want to overpower your guests with sensitve noses!

Try sunflowers or fall leaves as decorations (bouquets and such). She can get corn husk stalks at local farms for a reasonable price as well, they are tall and can be attached to pillars and whatnot. Get pumpkins and carve them into romantic shapes (heart, B&G names, the word love, etc) and display them along the aisle with candles in them (they mark the aisle clearly and look really pretty).
Good luck!
