Engaement Party

I got engaged on 07/16/2008. My fiance` and I opted to have a destination wedding on 06/11/2009. We will not have a reception and want to have an engagement/shower to introduce our family and friends as well as having a shower. There will be approx. 150-200 ppl. I need to know if this is ok and if 11/2008 is too early for this type of party?
