Monetary Gifts

A family member of mine recently got married and had with the invitations "monetary gifts appreciated". This was highly frowned upon. I can see putting it on a shower invite, but not the wedding invite. It almost came across like a cover charge. It also would seem that I guess they will not appreciate anything else I decide to give them. Well, since I got my invitation a few days before the wedding, I guess I will give them some type of gift some time before my one year is up.
