Padrinos are close family and friends who basically sponsor different aspects of a young couple`s wedding. For instance, an aunt and uncle might offer to buy your flowers, another pay for the rental of a hall, etc. From what I understand, THEY usually offer, not you ask. This is something done generally only in families who are, I guess I would say, very in touch with their culture. No offense, but I would think that if you had to ask what it was, then chances are you do not actively participate in traditional mexican culture and customs and so this may not be something that your family will think to do for you, or something you should ask them to do for you. Generally this is something that is offered, not asked for, so if no one`s offering then your family is not really huge on the Mexican culture and customs and you should probably not worry about padrinos. They are not necessary, but always welcome. Hope this helps answer some of your questions.
