Wedding Date

I would like to have a ceremony in Hawaii over Christmas, however due to IRS tax deductions I would like to make my marriage "legal" after January 1st. Does anyone know if I can have a ceremony, but wait a week to sign the offiial wedding paperwork to show I was legally married in 2009, even though the ceremony was in 2008?
