Are Shrimp And Meatballs Enough For Reception

Hi,

We are having an evening hors d`oeuvres reception (at about 7:30)... Do you think having just shrimp cocktail and cocktail meatballs would be enough? We have a very small budget.

Thanks,
Laura

Hi! The only problem you might run into is for people who are allergic to shellfish or those who are vegetarians. What about having a ceasar salad or something like that also? Good Luck!

No, two little hors d`oeuvres are not enough for an hors d`oeuvres reception. But it does depend on how many people you have. I would say for 100 people you should have a minimum of 7-8 different things.

I`m a vegetarian and would not even go to the reception if it was only shrimp and meatballs.

2 -4 appetizers would be fine if the bar is open or your serving champaign. If you need more ideas other than Shrimp and meatballs, why not mini hot dogs, mini pizza bites, or mini egg rolls. They can all be found inexpensive at your local grocery mart.

2-4 appetizers would be fine if you are serving dinner afterwards. But you said it`s an hors douvres reception so I`m assuming that there isn`t dinner. If this is just an hour or two without dancing then 2-4 appetizer is probably okay. But if you are having dancing and alcohol and a several hours then I have to agree with the girl who said 7-8 hors douvres.
If you decide to only serve 2-4 then I would write "refreshments after the ceremony". To write "hors douvres reception" would imply that you are having substantial hors douvres rather than just a couple of munchies. You need your guests to know the difference so that they aren`t starving thru your reception.

I too am on a very tight budget were paying for everything and pretty much are running out of ideas. I also had the hor derve thing (howeveryouspell it) and its a fine idea but you do have to have enough, and it depends on how many guests your having. Will there be drinks, cake, and champagne???? Coffee to. You can have a local culinary school cater it for a much cheaper cost. I am in southern california and if you need a referral email me back.

I too have to agree with the other women who said 7 or 8 things. I`m still undecided about what we`re serving but I was told by my caterer that if we go with hors d`ouvres only, then on average each guest tends to eat 10-14 pieces. With that in mind she suggested that we have no less than six different items on the menu and no more than ten. So the ladies who have said 7-8 items seem to be right on target.

I must be wrong but my feelings are- you do what you can do. If shrimp and meatballs are what you want to have and that is what your budget allows then I say do it. For my reception my aunt made chocolates and that was her gift to us. I greatly appreciated it. Maybe some close friends or family could help with the food as a wedding gift to you.

I have no idea how tight your budget is, but i just had my wedding in january, and we ere able to keep expenses to a minimum (including great ideas for invitations, centerpieces, food, drink, cake, and favors) and still had a lovely, lovely wedding. We invited around 80 people if you want any ideas, feel free to e-mail me!

Good luck!

How about some trays -veggies, fruit, cheese & crackers? not bank breakers, and even veggitarians would be happy

Why not salad fixing with different dressings and toppings--croutons/chopped ham/chopped egg/bacon bits/crackers and Celery/carrot/broccoli/cauliflower heads. Crackers and cheese--and a few varieties of soups with fresh home made style breads.

As a professional caterer, it`s actually cheaper to make a simple buffet meal than appetizers. This is just something for you to consider.

I understand about being on a tight budget! I`m thinking that maybe you should have more variety, just in case there are vegetarians, etc. You also could consider entertaining with more breads or starchy foods, since they are "fillers" and definetly cost less. Meat and shrimp are costlier, and maybe you could substitute them with different appy`s and more variety? Just a thought, good luck.
