To Have Or Not To Have A Bridal Shower

I am the mother of a bride to be and yes,I am planning most of the bridal shower activities but somebody has to get things rolling. But that`s not the point. My sister doesn`t know why I am having a bridal shower as bridal showers are to help set up households. My daughter, the bride-to-be, is all set household-wise as she has been living with her fiance for a year and a half. I do not agree that a shower is solely to furnish a kitchen, but to celebrate the upcoming nuptuals. Is a shower appropriate in this now-common situation? Is suggesting cash gifts appropriate as well?
