Wishing Well Poem For Bridal Shower

I wrote this for my sister-in-law`s bridal shower. Hope you find it helpful.

The Wishing Well

For those who don’t know what a wishing well is
Here’s a brief lesson on what history says.
In traditional times, a woman stayed home
Always with her parents – never alone.

The man went to college or off to the war
Till he found a good woman that he could adore.
Then he’d propose so the family could douse
The happy new couple with gifts for their house.

But as you now know, tradition has shifted
And so must our ideas of what gifts should be gifted.
The couple can’t ask for a house or a car
Still they don’t need new dishes or a masonry jar.

What Nic and Jay need more than anything now
Is a safe little nest egg which you can endow.
It won’t be used hastily or spent in a flash
It will be saved up and added to their “home owners” stash.

And while it’s hard to believe that these kids are all grown
They’re ready to start a life all their own.
To aid the new couple in the hefty endeavor
We wanted to do something helpful and clever.

So in lieu of the typical shower gift show and tell
We’re giving Nicasia a plentiful wishing well.
The well will be filled with well-wishers’ wishes
And instead of the usual flatware and dishes…

We’ll toss in some trinkets – those with a tiny price tag
Like a wooden spoon, a magnet, or a snazzy dish rag.
The gifts are not marked with a name or a bow
Just plain simple wrapping – so who it’s from, she won’t know.

But along with the wishes and trinkets bestowed
We’ll toss in some gift cards and cash to be stowed.
Cause as I may have mentioned once, twice or more
It’s a home that they want and need to save for.

So come with a trinket or a family recipe
And come with good wishes for our sweet bride-to-be.
But if you come with more than those trinkets and wishes
Make sure to include who the person to thank is.

That is the story of the gift wishing well.
We’ll see you at the shower. Thank you and farewell.
