Is Buying A Used Dress Off This Site Safe?

I feel like it`s a risk buying a used dress from someone you don`t know...especially some of these really expensive designer dresses like Melissa Sweet or Jenny Lee. Has anyone heard of any bad or good experiences buying dresses off the internet from random people....? Can we trust eachother? I`m new here..so just curious.

I had one bride who spent $2000.00 on a used gown for it to not show up and the person disappear after getting the money - we had to make a gown for her

And I have had a few other girls that have had bad experiences.

You just have to be careful and even then you are taking a chance.

I can`t speak for non-business sellers, but those of us that are businesses have paid for access to this site. Our reputations depend on us delivering our products as promised.

Good Luck with your search!

Denver, Just like anything else on the Internet...you must beware and do some checking. All of us who have legitimate businesses have paid a fee to belong and partypop has checked us out. As for brides selling their gowns, here`s my advice and it applies to all other buying on line as well...since anyone could pretend to be anything. (Just think about all the sexual predators on line trying to find young kids and the games they play, as an example!)
1. Don`t pay anyone money until you`ve checked them out....get name, address, phone number etc. And then actually phone them and talk to them to be sure you reach who you think you`ve been communicating with.

2. Do some email/telephone contacts and ask questions.

3. Ask for pictures of what you are buying...and if it`s a wedding gown, look for `real` pictures of the actual gown. Don`t accept just a picture from the company website. Ask for their wedding pictures for example.

4. When paying, get set up with a service like PayPal to do the sale, where you can protect your CC/checking account info and still have protection for the sale. If there is a way to pay with a major credit card, you always have chargeback protection. I know you cannot do that with a bride selling her own gown, but by the time you`ve done the other checking I mention, you`ll have a pretty good gut feeling for if this person is really selling the gown they say they are selling.

I don`t mean to imply we can`t trust the brides selling on here. But there is a LOT of scam attempts going on in the wedding industry and everyone just needs to be careful when you cannot meet face to face and look at the product you are buying.

JoAnne-

I couldn`t have said it better myself.

Real brides and businesses selling gowns are not the problem, it`s scammers that never had the gown to begin with. They post an ad claiming to have "hot" merchandise, like Monique Lhuillier or Melissa Sweet gowns....then they take multiple payments from whomever they lure in. They never had the gown, no one that sent them money gets anything...

The other problem, of course, is sellers that show pictures of one thing and then deliver another. Pictures of the real gown, as opposed to just designer`s catalog photos, are what you should be looking for.

JoAnne is absolutley correct- always, always use a method of payment, such as PayPal, that provides a solid recourse should something not turn out as expected.

Good Luck!

I have not bought anything on this site..but it seems more risky than ebay. I have paid 1200.00 for a reem acra from a seller on ebay.. She was a crook and i lost my money even though i spoke to her on the phone and had her contact info.... Another seller sounded great.. Wonderful emails.. Really sounded like a doll in person..but again..i lost about 600.00 on that transaction...and i would have lost more..but my credit card paid the amount that was put on the credit card.. If you buy on ebay ..look at the feedback .. Your dream dress is completely reliable...bridalsetc is wonderful and Lwageman is really great and has been around a long time...i would stay away from zero or low feedback ebay sellers ..if i were to buy on this site.. I would ask the seller to list it on ebay and i would pay through paypal with my credit card

I just want to say that one can ALWAYS pay via paypal and it doesn`t have to be listed on Ebay. I don`t know that there is anymore protection involved in listing on Ebay...other than you do have the feedback to look at. But it is PayPal that backs up your money transactions. You can send money to anyone via PayPal, as long as both of you sign on or are already members...and have given them your information. Another benefit with PayPal is that your own personal credit card info is kept secret from the seller too....so no one can steal your info and misuse it. IF you are wanting to buy/sell with another bride on this site, you could request that the payment be done via PayPal and you will be protected and have a means to complain to them within 45 days of the transaction.
