I just found a way to make the bride and groom have a cutting cake with the fake one. I have put together a cake with a fountain in it and fake cakes at the top. I found a stair way that i put from the fake cake to come down to a small real cake that the bride and groom can cut for the pictures. Then you have some one take it away for the cutting of the sheet cake in another room cut the cost of the cake. More for decorations and flowers. Now i have one more thing in my home business floral business for rental. Cherrie

I talked with a cake decorator today and she said that she could do the bottom tier (for cutting) and the very top tier (for our anniversary) in real cake and that any tiers in between could be fake. I thought this was a pretty good idea since you get the best of both worlds and you only waste the bottom portion. I saw a show on cake decorating and I can`t remember what kind of icing it was but it was harder (more like a dough) and gave the cake a matte appearance. Then they just decorate it. This would give the illusion that the entire cake is real and you could save a small fortune.

Wow I was just wondering how difficult it would be to make my own fake cake for my wedding, how lucky I was to stumble upon you ladies and your fabulous ideas. Thanks! :)

As a Wedding Entertainment Coordinator, I`ve seen "Fake Cakes" made with a "V" left in them so a piece of real cake can be inserted for the "Cutting" then frosted over and the area is "Marked" with icing or various things very discreetly so the Bride and Groom know where to cut. After the cutting and feeding, the cake is wheeled into the kitchen and a less expensive "Sheet Cake" is cut and served.

Hi-
I am a Pastry Chef, and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America--best in the country!
Dummy cakes are big business now--I own a party services/catering company in the Westchester/NYC area right now and EVERYONE is using a fake. You can put a lot more work into them without worrying about freshness or breakage. I am getting married in September, at a Ritz Carlton, and they suggested we bring a fake in to defray the cost. We looked everywhere for a dummy, and the best place that I have found -- cheapest as well --is called "taylor foam" just google it--all of theirs round, square, oval, ect are about $14 for a set of 4 or 5 "cakes". Well worth it, and the shipping is easy too...
Hope that helps and dont worry about what other people think is classy--this is your day. If you like it, do it! Good luck to you!

Christie,
I made a cake for a friends wedding a couples years ago. She didn`t want anything to goddy. Just simply and elegant. So what i did was frost the whole cake in 7 minute frosting then as decoration I put a edible glitter on it and all took the heads of several red roses and spiraled them around the cake from top to bottom. Just one strand start from one edge up top and swirl down to the bottom of the cake!
