Wedding Maid Of Honor

I have only one sister and she and I have always been very close. She sent out a webpage to everyone announcing her wedding party and her friend`s from high school are her bride`s maids and her best friend is her maid of honor. Is this normal? I guess I thought most people had their sister/brother for best man or maid of honor? I am just thrown off by this and wondered what is usual.
