1940`s Themed Wedding

My fiance and I just decided we want to have a 1940`s style wedding. We actually got to know each other while taking swing dancing lessons. We`ve been looking into old Hollywood Hotels as possible sites. But we still need more ideas. Got any....???

Do it at a old hangar at an airport (almost free of charge) and have an old WWII hangar party

1940`s 1950`s....I think it would be cool to have your hair in an old 40`s style and have your engagement pictures taken in B/W and a glamorous pose! Have it enlarged and display it at the reception. Then if you can find your greatgrandparents/grandparents/ parents wedding pictures or even extended family and also display them on a table...those old 40-50`s wedding pictures always seemed more glamorous! How about for the get away car to rent an antique car. My friend who`s husband is into old cars had a huge black 50`s I think Buick they rented. It was cool. I see much black/ silver/ glitter and glam. I had posted on a 50`s theme about being announced at the reception with a magaphone like the old time directors used, and how about using a red carpet when coming into the reception. Favors maybe martini glasses filled with silver jordan almonds with silver tulle and ribbon....I love these old hollywood theme`s I wish I would of thought of it for mine! Good Luck i hope this helps!

I have the same theme and I have a fun idea to share with you. Instead of numbering the tables I am having them named after 40`s and 50`s hollywood stars and each table has a picture of the star at their wedding in black and white. Get the "hollywood gets married" book that has elizabeth taylor on the cover, copy the picutures and laminate them. Use these to label the table i.e. "The Elizabeth Taylor Table" The "Marylin Monroe Table" the "Frank Sinatra table" etc...it really sets the mood!

If you`re anywhere near southern california, palm springs has an area called the movie colony that has homes formerly owned by Hollywood stars like Frank Sinatra, Liz Taylor, Lucy and Desi, Liberace (to name a few) and you can rent them out. It`s glamorous and represents the hollywood heydey but they may not be able to accomodate large weddings. I`m sure the chamber of commerce can steer you in the right direction.

Of course you should look into hiring a SWING band featuring old jazz/standards from Frank & Dean etc... I have JUST that band called Swing Reunion in St. Louis of which I "tailored" a bride`s live music for just that sort of theme! I even found a vintage dress to wear. I can also expand this routine 8 piece band into a 17 piece Big Band. Good Luck!

Hope your event is fun!

My sister is having a `40`s theme wedding and is holdiing her reception in a 1940 movie theater. There names will be posted on the marquie, they are having a black and white photo of them put in place of the movie poster, and sending tickets with there invitations. There will be a ticket taker and ushers as well as a short film, or slide show shown on the big screen of baby and childhood photos. It is going to be great. Hope that might help

I am also doing a forties hollywood themed wedding. Does anyone have any great ideas for colors? I am hiring celebrity impersonators of bacall and bogart to entertain and take pictures (maybe by a photographer dressed as an old reporter with an old fashioned camera) during the drink hour before dinner. Also we are blowing up 8x10`s of old romantic movie stills at eckerd to poster size to decorate the room.

Hi-I am in the same boat! My fiancee and I met swing dancing and had the same thought about the matter. There is still a lot of planning to be done, however one of the basic threads we have come up with is the single breasted suit and fidora for the groomsmen and the little hats with veils and shawls for the bridesmaids. We are also entertaining the idea--since we plan to have the wedding on a friday night and the reception on a saturday--of doing a black & white vintage highlight wheel of the wedding to show at the reception (rather than trying to pack a tiny church).

I love the idea of a 40`s themed wedding.
I wish we had thought of that!

Anyway, If ya`ll haven`t decided on a dress that I wanted to make a suggestion...Jim Hjelm. Several of his dresses are vintage inspired and so gorgeous!!
I don`t know what your budgets are like but some of these dresses are kinda pricey so you might check ebay or preownedweddingdresses.com.

Good luck with everything!

Ive just had a 1940`s wedding and it was absolutely fantastic. All the guests dressed the part, and it was held in an old theatre, all done in red velvet with gold balcony etc. It was decorated amazingly. All tables were named after Glen Miller tracks. The groom, best man and four sons arrived in full american military uniform in a Dodge Weapons Carrier and I arrived in an original American Staff Car. To begin the ceremony we blacked the theatre out and the silence was broken with the outbreak of war speech by Chamberlain, then the sounds (very loudly) of a lancaster bomber flew right over head following by the air raid siren, blitz noises and then the all clear siren whereupon all the lights came on and Glen Miller Moonlight Serenade was played and the bridesmaids one by one followed by me walked down. Accordingly to guests it gave them goosebumps and was breathtaking to see. We all then jitterbugged the night away. We have so many photos.

Hi Jo
I am a writer at Daily Mail Weekend magazine - we are keen to run a feature on themed weddings and was wondering if you would consider featuring? We would interview you all about it and you would need to have your photo taken for the piece too. Please give me a call to let me know
Many thanks.

Me and my wife just had the most amazing 1940 vintage wedding. Which included (4) 1940`s cars one was my own. Wedding dress made by two of her aunts. The flower girl dresses maid by her mom and the bridesmaid dresses and mother of the brides dress all made by a friend all form vintage patterns. Even the ring bears were in vintage out fits, as you will see if you watch the video. We also had antique vaces for the flowers. The reception was held at a 1920`s Mansion called The Felt Mansion (it is a must see). Last of all is a mariachi band for dinner and a full 10 pcs big band for dancing which played only music from that era. If you would like to see for yourself go to facephotography.com (pictures) or coastline-studios.com (Videos) You won`t be disappointed
