LINING A WEDDING DRESS WITH SMALL TRAIN
Hi
I am making a wedding dress with a small train. The Vogue pattern shows the actual dress with a single net lining sewn onto the wrong side of the outer fabric (satin backed dupion). There is then a separate layer of actual lining fabric which is just the length of the dress and does not include the train, to which the gathered net is attached giving the dress it`s fullness. However, I do not think it would look nice just the net showing as the train lining. Does anyone have any suggestions, eg could I run up lining fabric cut identical to the actual dress instead of this layer of net ? Then add the separate lining, as original pattern, to which the gathered net has to be attached? Also, would a lining fabric be attached to the hemline of the dress and train or left free? Could I perhaps use a finer fabric for the gathered net to be attached to? If the train is lined with a fabric lining would it have to be weighted or something like that? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Which vogue pattern did you choose? I am a visual person and need to see the dress to understand what you want to do. When is your wedding? My daughter is getting married August 4th and so we are making a silk and lace gown for her. She wanted something cool and didnt want a trane that she had to bustle and carry around all evening. I designed a slip with a trane behind it that will go under and out the back of the gown with lace peeking out of the bottom of her gown to tie them together. After the ceremony and pictures she can just take the slip off and doesnt have to worry about a trane for the rest of the evening. I found some exquisite lace with pearls and sequins online. If you email the pattern number to me I will look it up and see if I can offer a suggestion.

Hi
The pattern is Vogue 2717. The dress I am making is actually for my future sister-in-law. The dress fabric has a layer of net sewn onto it. Then the gathered layers of net are attached to another lining fabric. I have never came across a dress lined with a layer of net. It would mean if it was windy the net would be exposed on the inside of the train.

OK First of all the dress she chose is lovely. Are you adding any lace parts or anything to the dress or a band across the top of the bust? When is her wedding? My daughter`s wedding is August 4th and her concern was the heat and being comfortable.
Anyway....Wouldn`t it be easier to just put in a single lining made the same as the dress and buy a slip that already has the ruffles in it? The bridal shops have lots of different slips to choose from with all different fullnesses or some second hand shops carry them. You may even find one in the paper if you dont want new. As for using a finer fabric for the gathered net to be attached to, be careful that it isnt so fine that the netting will weight it down. If your going to bustle the train you dont want to weight it down. I am lining my daughters train with a fabric and I am not putting any weights on it. Did you look at the suggested fabrics on the back of the pattern? They always give you the suggested fabrics that will provide the desired results which is to look like the picture. As for the hem.....I dont know what your pattern calls for but I am attaching my daughters lining hem to the dress hem. I will sew them together so you dont see a hem then attach the lining at the waist. If your gonna make the netting lining you may not be able to attach the lining to the dress.
