Attire

My son is about to be married and his bride has picked out the outfit that she wants for me to wear. Then she asked me if it is appropriate for the mother of the groom to wear a hat to the wedding. To be honest, it has been 29 years since I was married and it seems that I am out of touch with the times. Is it appropirate for me to wear the hat?
