Bridal Shower After Married

My husband`s sister was planning a wedding for this month, however, in the fall some things happened that caused them to get married by a justice of the peace in October 2006. They are planning a reception for the extended family in July. My problem is that I found out they are also planning a bridal shower for July. She will have been married for almost 9 months at that time. To me, all my mother-in-law is doing is trying to get as many gifts out of people as possible. Is a bridal shower after you are married acceptable, or am I right in thinking this is a really wrong thing to do?
