Deprovera

I took Deprovera when I was 37 because I was done having children. I loved not getting my period but it made me extremely moody. I was on the shot for 3 years and after I went off the shot it took a year and 3 months for my period to return. Once it returned my bleeding was heavier than normal and I now have cycles approximately every 15 days!!!!! I do not recommend this to anyone who wants to have children especially.

Do you know where I can find other info about this? Is there medical info related to this? I have a friend on Deprovera and she`s 40. She`s very moody right now and I think that`s part of her problem. Her body is changing and it can`t because of the shot.

I had one shot of deprovera because my husband and I were going to Mexico. My reular periods are heavy and very painful. I didn`t want to have my period while we were on our holiday`s. At first I thought, this is great, no period, but then I started to gain weight and it won`t stop. I`ve gained about 15-20lbs. I feel terrible. I had the shot in March and I still haven`t gotten my period. The Dr. Said the shot would only last 3mths. My moods are swinging and the weight keeps coming.
Will I lose the extra weight? I`m never having this done again.

I was on Depo for almost 5 years I went off because I started to gain weight almost 35lbs...after 5 months off Depo I had no regular cycle and I got pregnant. Unfortuantley I miscarried after doing some research I have learned this is common of of Depo so to those of you still using know that this is one of the risks they do not tell you about.

I am a user of depo. I have only had the first short a month ago. My worry is that it seems that i am loosing weight. When I went for the short, I was weighing 65kgs, after one month I am now weighing 63kgs. Dos it mean that I will be loosing weight monthly or I have to be patient. When does the weight gain starts if one is to gain. The frequent headaches are another issue, will this go away? What about the mood swing/
Let me know what i am to expect. I do not want to loose weight.

I was on the depo approx 4 years ago and ended up pregnant but it turned out to be an eptopic pregnancy. The Dr told me this is a side effect of the shot. I then went on ortho tri cyclen and loved it but hated rememembering the pills. So I just went back on the shot 2 months ago and it seems the weight just keeps coming I think I have went up 2 pant sizes. I dont even want to know what the weight is. I haven`t gained this much wight since I was first pregnant. The headaches come about every afternoon. I don`t remember these horrid side effects at all. What is going on and will it go away? If I stop the shot will the weight automatically go down ? HELP

I am a boyfriend of a depo client and what I am experiencing is a lack of sexual desire from her. I have never been with a woman that has such a lack of desire for intimacy until I started to date her. When trying to understand her issue I found out that she was on deprovera, and one of the common side effects of the drug is loss of sexual desire. Is there any way to counter this side effect or compensate for it? Is anyone else here experiencing this at all, its ruining my relationship with her due to lack of intimacy. Please advise

My boyfriend noticed the same thing with me - I hadn`t noticed it until he brought it up. We`ve been dating for over a year, but I took my first dose about a month and half ago and I am already expirencing the same problem. I have yet to talk to a doctor about it, but I plan to - But I believe that the only way to fix the problem is to go off the medication/

I had my first shot after the birth of my daughter a little over 7 years ago. I was 17 when she was born and barely out of high school. I had terrible mood swings and depression. The depression was so bad, suicide was contemplated. Luckily my best friend interrupted my plans. I was only on Depo for 6 months (2 shots). I still have bouts of depression and moodyness. I also never had to deal with acne in school, But now I can`t seem to control it. Headaches are also a big issue. I have them daily. I have never read the side effects of Depo. I was only told about the depression part. I wonder If these may be some long term effects? I always blamed them on hormonal changes after childbirth. This never crossed my mind.

Kim, it is a slight possibility that Depo may have contributed to some of your difficulties. However, what is far more likely is Post Partum Depression. This strikes almost 90% of women following birth, and although most are mild cases, there are some that have very serious affects from PPD. PPD can occur anytime within 2 years following giving birth and left untreated can last for years. Go to your doctor and voice your concerns. See what he/she has to say. Anyhow, good luck.

I was on depo when i was in high school and never experienced any side effects that I knew of. I loved it. Until I didnt get my shot on schedule and got pregnant. It turned out ot be eptopic and I had to undergo surgery to have it removed. It was a mess. Later I got married and had my second child then decided to try Ortho Tri Cylcen. It was wonderful. Kept my face clear, my weight was down. But I had a hard time remembering the pill. So I went to the Dr in September to get another Depo shot.. BIG MISTAKE
I gained 15lbs in 2 months my eating was out of control as well as the acne. I will never get another depo shot. My Dr said these are some of the side effects. The weight gain is due to the amout of progestrin(? ) all at one time. Anyway, anyone thinking of getting the shot, you may want to due your research.

I`ve been on depot over 4 year. It`s not for everyone, and this birth control option should be discuss in detail with you doctor. There are a number of side effectives, as there is with every form of birth control. For my personal experiance ... GREAT! I don`t have to buy pad or tampons, there are no cramps or mood swings, my weight {115 lb.} has allways been the same. But the best thing .. Sex every night. And more.

I hope you good health, mood and more ... If you are on the pill, needle, the patch, or anything else. You need to find what`s the right thing for you.

I am 21 now, when I was 17 or 18 I went on Depo for a year and gained 35 pounds. I was psycho and moody as hell! I got off it right away and did some research and found exactly what this thread is showing. It makes many women gain weight and become so moody that they are almost not like themselves.

I have been on Deprovera twice. The first time (three to four years ago) I was on it for a year and like you all I thought it was great. I never attributed the massive weight gain to the injection - I thought it was because I was in a bad marriage. After being off it for about 1.5 years, I gave it another shot. This time I was more in touch with my body, I noticed the weight gain, moodiness, exhaustion. I have been off it again for 6 months and still haven`t gotten my period. The doctor put me back on the oral pill in hope it would "cycle me back into a period" No luck to date, I never thought I would be so looking forward to getting a period.

I cant` shift the weight, am exercising heavily every day and eating very healthily, still putting on weight. DONT take this contraception if you can avoid it, I dread to think what I have permantly done to my body.

I was wondering if anyone else has had trouble with liver enzymes being elevated after taking the shot... I know those aren`t tests that you normally have, but my SGOT and ALT have both been elevated - a LOT - since taking the shots. Why do they say "Tell your doctor if you have liver disease"?

I have been on the shot for four years. I initially got on it because I started dating a guy and the relationship became serious. Fortunately, I am still with him today and we are engaged. Unfortunately, he wants me to get off the shot because he wants children. I want to be married before I have children. So this causes a dent in our relationship because we can not compromise. By reading this site, I`m beginning to realize the side effects in me. I am always moody, I started working out because I gained weight, and I think my face is breaking out. I believe this is from the depo, I just never paid attention to it before. What options do I have? I don`t want to be too sterile for so many years like some others I`ve read about. Yet, I`m not ready to get pregnant in a few months either. HELP!!!!!
