Hey! I am also engaged to a brazilian, but he will help you with your dillema. No sweat!
Brazilian weddings are very similar to american ones, dresses, ceremony, cakes, foods, guests to invite, and guests not to invite. But, there are some brazilian things that you can incorporate into your wedding. In brazil, the bride arrives late, like 20 or 30 minutes.. I think its not going to happen in my wedding, but.. To each thier own. The guests are just sitting there, for 30 minutes while everyone waits (which is not done in america.. You do not make your guests wait if possible, and a late bride is a wedding coordinators worst nightmare!) Also, you could give his parents a small present, and vice versa.. This is something I will be doing. That is all I have for you.. Good Luck and Congratulations.

Hello Jessica
I`m pretty much in the same boat, the only tradition I found was that the groom has to wrestle a donkey to the ground................... If he manages it he gets the girl !!! it`s called bumba-meu-boi, perhaps you`ve heard of that one ? Sadly we don`t feel that the chapel would appreciate us bringing a donkey so oddly enough we`ve ruled it out. I`d be interested to know if you came up with anything else .................. Thanks

Hey girls, i`m brazilian and i`ve never heard of the donkey stuff, that`s more like a folclore, nothing to do with wedding.
The bride must be late, nothing like 30 mins, but at least 10 minutes after the groom, you don`t want to get there before him, do you?
The groom CANNOT see the bride dressed up before the
Ceremony, he can`t even see your gown, he`ll only see it when you arrive at the church...He must pick the bride up to walk in to the new house/hotel room holdinding her on his arms and step inside with the right foot for the first night after
Marriage...good luck!!!
I hope that i helped, and excuse the errors, my English is not that good...

My son is marrying a girl from Brazil. What is caipirinha and pagode? Any other traditions, as they are getting married in the states and I want to include all their family traditions.

Thanks!

I just wanted to thank everyone for the replies, our wedding was wonderful! We didn`t have any caipirinha to drink, but we did have guarana, and that was a big hit. We ran out because everyone loved it. Also, we named the tables (instead of numbering) after cities in Brazil and cities in Costa Rica (for my family) and everyone loved that idea! We had PLENTY of samba music to dance to, all in all, everyone had a great time! I wish luck to everyone else`s wedding, take care and have fun!

The tradition is very different in brazil, if you are getting engaged both of you have to wear an engagement ring on your right hands, when you get married you switch , you put the ring on the left hand. Another thing is you are supposed to be late and if the groom sees your dress before the wedding is very bad luck. Another thing is .....do not drop your wedding bands at the time of exchange, it is known that if that happens your marriage won`t last.
Last tip.......for the reception.....get a lot of beer!
Good Luck

Hey, I`m brazilian, and I`m getting married too (to an American, though). I think the most different thing is the "padrinhos" (the wedding party. In Brazil, we don`t pick them separately: bride`s maids and groom`s men. We pick couples--married or not, we even match them up. In my family, we usually have three couples on each side. My thing for my American wedding is to have a prayer in Portuguese, have the groom`s men carry a little Brazilian flag, enter the aisle with a Brazilian song (by Vinicius de Morais), and have a lot of Brazilian food, drinks and music. I`m also giving "casadinhos" as my party favor: they are brazilian cookies and their name in English is "well-married" cookies. It all adds up!

Russel,

Don`t go too nuts about the donkey thing. It`s probably a very regional tradition, and it may not make sense to her either. If you are having a religious ceremony it would be nice of you to add a prayer in Portuguese, for example....Ask her about the ring thing too. In Brazil, both bride-to-be and groom-to-be wear an engagement ring. Food and family are a big deal in Brazilian weddings too. My mom is coking all the food for mine... Congratualtions and good luck.

Hey Russell my brother got married in Rio and for his honeymoon he went to Porto Seguro, Bahia. He said it was very nice. Well i just got married in December and oh boy i`ll tell you i had some wedding. I live in NJ and we had gotten so much snow that day it was crazy. I arrived at the church one hour and half late. It turned out ok though.

My family is Brazillian and i grew up there until I was about 6 years old, I`m getting married in March and reading these posts have given me some nice ideas of how to bring a little bit of Brazil into my wedding.
Also for the person who was asking....
Capirinha is a brazillian drink made of an alcohol called "cacasa" wich is like rum but made from sugar cane instead of molases then put into very sweet lemonade (OH SO GOOD ON A HOT SUMMER DAY!!) and pagode is a form of samba (a dance).

Hey to anyone, i was reading on the bulletin board about all of the brazil stuff. I`m doing a project in english (a mock wedding) on Brazil, and I know hardly anything about it! I`m also having problems finding stuff. Could you tell me all of the stuff you learned? It would really help a lot! If ANYONE could give me info, I would be really happy. Thanks a lot

Jane,
I`m doing a project in French about Brazilian weddings(don`t ask). If you have any links to web sites about this, it would be great!
Thanks,
