I also had the same questions, even though I was keen, my fiance wasn`t and at one point wanted to forget the whole idea of an engagement party. We ended up organising a BBQ get-together at our house for close friends and family. It has since turned into extended family and friends but we are just putting on a BBQ and providing some alcohol as we are on a limited budget.
I think it is important to have some sort of recognition celebrating your engagement but it doesn`t have to be a huge expensive affair (we are saving that for the wedding!)
However, do whatever you and your partner want to do, as I know people who didn`t have an engagement party and were quite happy about that too.
Our party is this Saturday and I have gone from thinking it was a huge hassle to now really looking forward to it.

I`m not having an engagement party! I figure most of the people I want to know about the engagement I see on a regualer basis anyway, and we party together then. I figure save the money for the wedding and celebrate your little heart out at the reception
