Mardi Gras Has Many Faces Not Just Breasts

Mardi Gras Has Many Faces Not Just Breasts

To Myself and to many who live in New Orleans, Mardi Gras is as important as Christmas in many ways. I believe It deserves some respect and reverence. L, personally I have no problem with the Bare Breast thing. After all , its an activity that takes place mostly in a small part of The French Quarter, which lets face it, is an adult playground. But I`m tired of seeing this portrayed as Mardi Gras`s only attraction.

I have seen the many faces of Mardi Gras, having used total strangers bathrooms. , as well as witnessing many people sharing throws, food drink and even blankets with total strangers. Often ,as we spend the night on St. Charles awaiting the dawn, and King Zulu with Mardi Gras most sought- after throw The Zulu Coconut.
My boyfriend, David ,never fails to get a coconut.Last year he lost a tooth in the chase and did not hesitate to use the loss when the Zulu Coconut. I `ve seen children holding hands and dancing in the street on St Charles ,along with people of all ages , races , and backgrounds . I`ve seen The Little Rascals parade in Metairie. The woman Krewe `s and experenced firsthand the yearly
Magic of being who or whatever one wants to be,

David and I, who fight like cats and dogs ,have magically and mercifully fallen in Love during the entire Mardi Gras season for 10 years now. Let `s face it, despite all the ugly stories for the number of people attending Mardi Gras we are a pretty well behaved group of people.
I once attended classes at a local school regarding New Orleans ,A young man attending the same classes described Mardi Gras as "A bunch of drunken Frat boys" If you attended Mardi Gras on Canal St. Only you might believe that.
I was annoyed at the young man, but a fellow older and wiser student brought him pictures of herself in a fairy costume complete with magic wand, Blessing people along a street in her area, all kinds of people came forward to hug her.Others came with pictures of children in their costumes, and photos of everything from " The Little Rascals " to " Barkcus,The Canine Parade . `.

Many visitors to New Orleans believe Mardi Gras is solely a French Quarter experience . Large parades such as Bacchus and Endemyion are a must to see but Downriver definately has Mardi Gras attractions, Bywater and Maragny have their parades as well. Three walking parades "roll" through the streets of the Vieux Carre, and neighboring Fauburg Marigny and the Bywater.
The Krewe de Vieux and the Krewe of St. Ann who often depict political satire and usually are a little risque. The Krewe of Barkus is for all the dogs of the city (the four legged variety) and parades exclusively in the French Quarter. Bring your camera
Unlike on Canal St, you can get close.

I especially enjoy attending for the parades that include" Flambaux " People carrying firey torches from a time when the light
Was needed. It is the oldest tradition at Mardi Gras! I know a few of these guys and they really put on quite a show .Our local Flambaux hero makes sandwiches at the local store by day ,but during Mardi Gras when night falls he becomes The Prince of Fire and Lord of the Dance, Bywater style.

. It saddens me to see how few people throw coins, The Flambaux performers are , in my view, not given the reconition and appreciation they deserve. But they they perform with great skill and enthusiam every year safegaurding a valuable cultural practice ,. I bring plenty of change to Mardi Gras and I hope more people will join me every
Year . IIt`s time people remembered to acknowledge and reward the flamaux performers, not to mention giving ourselves a little
Recognition for throwing the biggest party on earth in relative safety and harmony.

As founder, (20 years ago) of the Krewe of Little Rascals, it always does my heart good when I read something that is positive and uplifting about Mardi Gras. You really do "get it". Thanks for the mention of what I believe is the greatest krewe for youth around. And let me know if you want to get an upfront seat at our ball.
