Make My Own Veil?

Hello everyone:

I haven`t yet found my dress, and haven`t even started to look at veils and headpieces yet. But I visited a craft store this afternoon, where there were materials that you could use to make your own veil. So I started thinking...I mentioned the idea to a girl I work with, and she said that she had made her own and would be delighted to help me.

I have some questions here. First, can a beautiful piece actually be made inexpensively? I`ve read that glue is a bad idea, as it yellows as it ages, but I`m not a sewing person. What do you all think? Has anyone out there successfully made their own veil?

I am making my daughters for our wedding. The craft stores are inexpensive and look pretty much the same. The glue does yellow but so does the tulle after a number of years. It depends on if you want a keepsake or something that looks nice and is less costly. You might want to try ebay if you are unsure. There are many on there that are inexpensive. You can also hand sew these. I hope this helped you out some

Hi Jennifer!

Thanks for your input.

The way I`m thinking of it right now, I can probably give this a go- and if I don`t like it, I`m probably out $30 or so. So I think it`s worth a go.

Have you already made your daughter`s, or is this currently a mental project? :)

Right now a mental project yet for theirs, but I did make one for a friend of mine. I sewed the Tulle to a comb which we attached to her tiara. It worked out pretty well, I would hardly say I was a professional but it worked and she loved it. Good luck and let me know if I can help you with anything else.

For my daughters wedding, I bought a "used" vail from a thirft store such as salvation army.. And dismanteled part of it and restyled it.... I`m almost done and it looks just like the 300.00 dollar ones we looked at bridal stores.

I just finished making my own veil.. My wedding is on July 19th and I didn`t want to spend a ton of money on my veil since i wanted the main focus to be on my dress, so i took some of the material from the craft store and interwined a hair comb into it and then i hot glue gunned some crystals along the edge of it along with a very thin white ribbon

I actually made my own veil (well sort of) I went to a material shop where the tuling was already sewn. I took small silver beads and sewed them into the veil. It took me about 48 hrs but they little beads glimmered in the sun, and during the reception. I am from canada, and to buy the same veil would have cost me about 90-100 dollars. I spent $25.

I should be done with mine within few days. My veil is a cathedral lenght with little flowers and bids. I am making it totally from scrach. I bought every needed things in Hobby Lobby , Wal mart, JoAnns and Micheals and I spent around 15 dollars...oh, or even less, becuase I returned few things I wasn`t going to use. I don`t use glue to make ribbon edges, but some kind of tape that after ironing sticks things together.

Good luck!

I thinking about making my own veil too, but a friend told me to check e-bay first. I`m glad I did, I got a brand new, beautiful veil for about 16.00 including shipping.

An interesting idea is to find a wedding gown that comes with a wrap or a stole (alot of them do these days) and get creative with it! My dress for my wedding in may comes with a beautiful stole that matches the dress perfectly. I attached some hair pins and wrapped it around a bun. Or you can just add a hair comb or attach it to a headpiece. If you are afraid to do it yourself, bring it to a seamstress. It will save time looking for the perfect tulle for your veil. Good Luck!

I am wearing a jessica mcclintock dress and it comes with a shawl that i would like to make into a veil and my problem is how do I attach it to the comb? How do I gather it to sew it?

You can buy tulle very cheaply at lots of fabric stores. You can also get a plastic comb, or headpiece, and attach it to the veil by sewing it on. If you want to use glue, I`d recommend a hot glue gun. I think it would be better to sew it on, or even take it to a tailor/seamstress and have them attach it, they probably would not charge much to do this.

My Grandma offered to make mine. I want a cathedral veil to make up for my plain dress and lack of train. I want silver jewles spread throughout-like rhinestones. I want satin ribbon along the edges. It`s much cheaper to make it. So where would I find the rhinestones or jewles? It sounds like a silly question but my Grandma has looked at fabric stores and Wal Mart and can`t find them anywhere! I haven`t found any either but she`s the crafty one. And help for me?

Erica, I know that they sell those kind of things at craft stores, i`ve seen them there before, did you ask a sales person, one thing you can try is to look for a bedazzler, it would be in the kids section of the craftstore (michaels or joann`s should have it). In case you don`t remember this from the early 90`s, its a little contraption that attaches rinestones and such to clothing, etc., they started carrying them again a couple years ago and as far as i know still do. Good luck!

Def. Look in michaels or try ebay...i am planning to sew some crystals into my veil and i got on ebay 4mm swarovski crystals, with the hole in the middle so thread can go through. They are small enough to be subtle, but big enough to work with. Michaels also has them, too. The crystals come in different colors too. The rhinestones would be there as well and a little dab of hot glue or fabric glue should hold it! good luck!

I made my own veil, and it was pretty easy. First I cut the tulle and sewed ribbon with a sewing machine onto the edges. Then I hot glued the tulle to a comb (hint, start by glueing both side ends first, then the middle and then work your way by dividing each section into middles and glueing that way, this ensures that the folds are even). I then glued ribbon overtop of the comb to hide the ends. My veil is gorgeous and only cost me about $10.00. I could never have afforded one from a bridal shop, this also gave me a nice personal touch I can use in my wedding.

I`m 4 days away from my wedding and in the process of making my veil. My advice - start early! I`ve found that tulle can catch really easily when sewing ribbon on the edges - make sure that your tension on the sewing machine isn`t very high. Also, my veil is a square shape and I`m going to have 4 crystals hanging from each edge. One edge will hang in the front with the other three at the back. I`ll have a simple plastic comb holding it all together. It`ll look great, I know! (only cost me $AU40 and the one in the store was $AU150!)

You have to check out www.bridalveilcreations.com

I am very happy with my veil. I custom designed the veil exactly how I wanted it for only $32, with free shipping!
This site worked very well for my budget and taste (I could not find a simple veil for under $100 anywhere!). I ordered a 26" veil with satin cording, and I am extremely happy with the results!!
