Who Pay For Grooms Tuxedo?

Hi,
My friend is attending his friend`s wedding as one of the groom`s men. He paid for his tuxedo rental and also was asked to chip in to pay for the groom`s tuxedo as well.. I thought this is a little strange.. I want to confirm if this is what people usually do. Note: the groom is not poor, dont understand why we have to rent tux for him..
