Engagement Party

We`re having an engagement party at the end of this month but are not getting married until next year. Do I send invitations to everyone that I`m inviting to the wedding (over 100) including people out of state or do I just invite the closer people that will probably come to it?
I was thinking of sending invites to long distance people as an annoucement of our engagement. Is that typically done with a note saying that I know they won`t probably come but wanted to let them know of the engagement?

In my opinion you should just send out invitations for your engagement party to local and immediately people. For your out of town guests I would send them an announcement announcing your engagement. This way they aren`t surprise when they receive an invitation inviting them to bridal shower and if they aren`t able to attend the shower they can still partake and send you a bridal shower gift.
