Question For A Seamstress

I found my dream wedding gown online and I know absolutely nothing about sewing/altering/etc. The dress is perfect, except that it is strapless and I prefer to have a little more support. The dress is made for someone as tall as 5`10``. I am 5`6`` and don`t plan to wear heels so it would need to be shortened. Would it be possible for a seamstress to take the leftovers from shortening the gown to make just plain 1-2 inch wide straps? The gown is very simple, just some embroidery on the front, no beads, lace, or sequins would be involved. Thanks in advance for your expertise, this will be the deciding factor on whether I buy the gown or keep looking.
