Where are you located? I was doing wedding and event planning for a while, and I can give you some information on what I did, but I live in Las Vegas, and it is a little easier here.

My guess girls is to do some research around the town that you live. Look through the phone book to see if anything of the nature of the job that you want is in it. Go down to the place and ask the people what does their job include what experience was needed. If you live in a place where there is no such thing I`d say plan a trip to a big city near you go to their phone book and look it up or find an event planning company act like a customer ask lots of questions. Look on the internet or go to a library look at books that would be the best bet of all. Libraries have everything. Look up cook books, fashion books, fabrics, etiquette books. The best thinq about a wedding planner is the they are educated in lots of things so I`d suggest lots of reading and imagination.the reason that people go to wedding planners is that they have a broader imaginationand details that the consumer can`t even fathom. Also when you do become a wedding planner ask the consumer question of their perfect wedding and expand on that idea have a mental picture of their wedding in you head and expand it. Make it the most beautiful wedding you can imagine within a budget(ofcourse).Make out lists of everthing that is needed for the wedding ie. Photographers, catering, floral arrangements, where it will be,what date, what season, who will marry them, ect and so on.

Also go to bridal shows look at dresses. Become their friend, be enthusiastic, dress for success ( if you don`t no one will take you seriously), smile (only the most confedent will et the job smiling means you know what you are doing and have everything under control), be polite, use correct vocabulary and diction ( speaking eloquently and clearly shows sophistcation to the consumer and lets them know that they can trust their wedding to be eloquent sophistcated and a dream come true), read up on interior decoration, floral arrangements, cultures (you must know detail about the wedding that you want to present), make a sample booklet of things you put together, most of all the job of a wedding planner is dependent on talent and imagination. Do you research round town about bands, catering, florist, locations, get prices make a budget.

There are no college courses other than a one-day community education class at some colleges that teach one to become a wedding coordinator. There are correspondence courses, however. Whether you need to take one will depend on your knowledge of the wedding industry and event planning in general.

Unless you live in a large metropolitan area, you will not be able to support yourself as a coordinator. Most of us have employed spouses, work at another job, or both.

Hiring a planner is a luxury, so when the economy goes down as it has recently, or couples are on a tight budget, the planner is the first one to go.

If you are really interested in being a wedding planner, first look for employment with hotels, resorts, conference centers, caterers, and other businesses also involved in the event industry. If you try to get a job with a coordinator, you may be aske to sign a non-compete agreement which would prevent you from working for any other company for a period of years. Also do your market research to be certain that there is a need for another coordinator in your area.

I`ve helped quite a number of friends and relatives create memorable events since i was eighteen but i never thought it was much more fun to do all these and earn at the same time..i started planning weddings in the year 2001.. To date, i have planned 34 and i still have 7 this year alone..i`ve been lookin for a school that would offer such a course but i found not even one.. So, how did i become one? i just decided to be one.. I knew that all that i am and my previous jobs helped me get to this point.. Im an excellent cook and i know the current market prices.. This is definitely an advantage because it has helped me scout for the best caterers with reasonable rates.. I had a degree in bs psychology which should help you A LOT because you would have to deal with yourself, brides and relatives who couldnt take a firm grip on their sanity during wedding preps and/or the day itself.. If you cant keep your own then you most certainly cannot help others keep theirs. .worked for a company that exports fabric to the us..i`ve learned a lot about fabric - . . Then i worked as executive assistant to two premier fashion designers.. This helped me acquire the "eye" for what would look good in a client.. Working with them on fashion shoots and shows also gave me the opportunity to get connected to photographers, videographers, make-up artists, bridal accessory makers and florists..the rest is just really using what you already know.. For example.. A client may want butterflies to be released during her dinner wedding reception and you know well enough that butterflies dont fly at night so you may just as well discourage her from doing so.. Most of your knowledge should come from what you know would work and what won`t.. I started by getting all the service contacts that i can find.. The internet would most certainly be your bestfriend because it would help you get all the information that you`ll ever need..
Bottomline is, you should know more about nature ( what would work for a particular season at a particular place ), food, cakes, invites, churches, reception venues, make-up, photographgers, videographers, music, gifts, manners, religious practices, fashion, fabric, people than most people do.. Now if you have all these then you just might be good to go.. Start with one a month but dont go for more than three! it`s always good to start with a number that`s manageable.. Feel free to ask me questions and id be most happy to help..
