Bridal Shower By Mail??

I am the maid of honor in my little sisters wedding. I am starting to plan a bridal shower, but all of the guests that I plan to invite are out of state and will not be able to afford to attend to fly up to illinois to attend the shower and the wedding! she is also out of state, so should i plan a shower by mail? what exactly is that, and is it frowned upon?
