Amount Of Cash Wedding Gift

What is the proper cash gift to give at a wedding for a family member and/or a more casual friend. We have usually given $100 but were recently advised we should be giving $250 at least. Does the amount given relate at all to the oppulence of the wedding itself?

I`m glad to hear that it`s up to me. I try to take into account whether the couple is paying the bills or a well-off Dad. With caterers running $100 to $150 per person, we try to cover the cost of our meal if the bride and groom are picking up the tab-- and put $200 to $300 in a card.
