DJ Disappointment

We recently had the misfortune of having Spin Around Sound (Tom White) DJ our daughter`s wedding. Although my daughter had a great time; 99% of the music played was the heavy metal, punk or emo that they liked, everyone else besides their friends had very little opportunity to dance to music they liked. He claims on his website that he accommodates everyone. How come there were at least six tables of people who always get up to dance at affairs, sitting down for most of the night. He did not pay attention to the crowd. He only paid attention to the bride and groom. We were lied to by Tom through our daughter, but I can`t blame her completely, because his website says the same thing he claimed. He said things like, "I play tunes that people don`t necessarily expect to hear at affairs all the time (songs they recognize and enjoy)", "I play several sets of music from each genre and for each generation", ". Well, he didn`t do either. His idea of playing something from the 60`s for all those baby boomers was "The Twist" and one other song I can`t even remember now.
There was nothing else and when a cousin asked him to play 60`s and 70`s music, he said he was playing what the bride wanted. My daughter gave him a list of songs that we wanted and songs my parents wanted (they wanted music from the 40`s) and he ignored it. Again, only a song or two.
Shame on him for taking our money and ignoring our requests and desires. I certainly would never recommend him to any of my friends, co-workers or enemies.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. As a prof. Dj / Kj I hate to hear about things like this. Sometimes it seems like anyone w/ a mixer or PC thinks they are a DJ. Your post doesn`t say where you are from, but here in central NY (Syracuse area) I am knownfor keeping the party going for everyone.
For all you folks out there looking for a good DJ, be sure to get references. The guy that plays at the local Gin joint or frat party isn`t necess. The guy to do a wedding. You want someone with experience, References and Quality equip.
Price alone will not guarantee a good time either. Many large outfits have a pool of dj`s who are getting only a small portion of what you lay out, and don`t always care about you 1st. Also the big services can`t afford to put out multiple top shelf systems for part time DJ`s.
I have kept small by choice and am known for catering to my customers and their guests and putting on a show that will appeal to everyone, with top of the line gear. I also keep my pricing flexible, to keep things affordable so that even the most modest event doesn`t have to have a repeat of what you experienced.
