Engagements Party For Self?

I have recently become engaged and want an engagement party to announce the news. Is it completely faux pas to throw the party ourselves (as both sets of parents are hundreds of miles away)?
How would one word the invitation? And lastly, how does one go about the actual announcement at the party?
