1940`s Wedding
I`m also planning a 1940`s wedding and have gotten alot of splendid ideas just surfing the web. But first I did some research on the era. It was very Hollywood and glamour. So my gown is a replica of a starlet`s day gown, very liquid sleek, sophisticated, sexy with sholder pads. The veil is very short attached to to a splendid 40`s hat that lays low down near an eye, at an angle. Calla lilies were the accepted wedding flower. My centerpieces are really neat (e-mail me and I`ll send you a picture). Favors are miniature calla lily candles. I`m also having a crescent moon fashioned to use as a backdrop for pictures (remember seeing those starlets sitting on a half moon looking so sad). I`ll be more than happy to send anyone pictures if interested.

What did your invitations look like. I am trying to find something that would work for a 1940`s style wedding.

I got my invitations at invitationconsultants.com. I think my item number is 8781. They have a number of calla lily invitations, but I loved this one. I ordered a sample just to be sure and it`s perfect. Now if you want some really cool 1940`s invitations that are definitely different, try decodezigns.com. If you have any other questions, just ask. I`m having a great time with this.

Apparently, we`ve all got the same bright idea for a wedding theme...1940`s Hollywood! We are just starting to plan ours now. We`re going to use framed pics of 1940`s Starletts instead of the traditional "table numbers" and we`re thinkng of incorporating some Ostrich feathers in the centerpieces. I would LOVE to hear some of your ideas, and see pics. Any sites that you all could think of for some great decorating tips would be appreciated too. My email is terasa425@yahoo.com.

I would love to see your wedding plans, especially the crescent moon idea. The invites my friend has chosen has the bride lounging across a crescent moon and the groom in a tux hovering over her their lips about to touch. It is really a 1930`s look. Very stylish...

Hi. My daughter & I are just starting to plan her wedding with a 1940`s theme and would love to see your photos. The reason she chose her reception location is that my parents were married in the same ballroom 65 years ago and it is till very vintage looking-even the same light fixtures.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Has anyone received photos they requested? I have not...and maybe because I didn`t include my email address, but than I would assume a post would be made here saying it is needed? At any rate, here it is. Zelda_zonk@yahoo.com

Let me explain. I can only send pictures of the plans at this stage and have done so for many people. I have heard nothing in return from anyone. I do keep changing and enhancing and visited Blushing Bride which provided me with beautiful options.

I would love to see what you did for centerpieces. I`m trying to incorporate as much as I can of the 40`s into my wedding as possible, on a VERY tight budget. Any ideas for decorations? Our ceremony & reception are both outside.

Hi, i have been seraching all over for a cute bridal head accessory to wear on my head. I am very into the whole 40`s little hats with the short veil and feathers. Do you recommend any places to shop? i live in california. May i see your pictures?

I also am wearing a hat as are my bridesmaids. I got the frames for the hats from www.patternstudio.com. I`m using BFC4475 which is a wide tilted brim; the bridesmaids are BF28P with a Juliet point. Both styles are worn low over one eye. The bridesmaids will have ostrich feathers that swoop down across the face. Because the bridal veils were worn in the back rather than across the face in the 1940`s (not necessarily ALL but it appears from extensive research to be the accepted way at the time), we`re trying to incorporate feathers into the bridal veil with a long streamer or something incorporating netting. Also veils were either fingertip or floor length. I`m not doing that with the slinky dress I`ve got.
FYI: Because it was during the war years, a lot of women wore suits with little hats while the men wore their uniforms.
Go to the library and get "Vintage Wedding" by Daniela Turudich. It has a wealth of information in it. Guess what they served...chicken salad sandwichs!

One thing I reccomend is that you have a live band/ orchestra, No DJ. That would really let you keep with the period. Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, and Louie Armstrong have great music and would help with the theme.
If you are going to have place cards or assigned seating, you can use old black and white pictures of stars from that period autographed to the person who will be sitting in the seat. The pictures can also be used as a great take home favors and you can kill two birds with one stone.
Cigarette girls passing around the favors of choice would also be a great idea.
Good luck and congratulations.
