The traditional gift for the 1st ann. Is paper. The contemporary gift is a clock. I bought my husband a book and framed his acceptance letter into optometry school. I had a very limited budget. You can find books on ebay and amazon. The book that I got him was used, but looked brand new. You could also get your fellow a cool print or painting and have it framed. I also thought of getting my husband a palm pilot or something like that which would have a clock in it, but would be more than just a clock. Thingsremembered.com would be a good place to find something really special and they do engraving as well. You could put a really special message for him on his gift.
Hope these ideas help!

Things from the heart mean much more than anything you could buy, so don`t worry - use a special talent you have: if you sing, sing him a song or write him one AND sing it, or write him a poem, or an essay about how you first met.....paint him a picture, make a video.........for those of us with less talent (i can relate) - how about putting together a scrapbook of memories and pictures of your first year together (this should count as a "paper" idea, I would think),,,,paper is the easiest gift idea.....give him a "love coupon" for an erotic fantasy or write out an invitation for him to meet you at a certain place at a certain time, and leave the invitation where he will find it, then meet him in that place dressed to kill and take him out for a fancy dinner, a riverboat cruise, or a midnight walk in the park and ride on the swings........give him a gift certificate to a hotel for a night of romance or better yet, make the reservation and leave the key to the hotel in his car, on his pillow, in his briefcase....wherever he`ll find it....then be waiting there for him for a night to remember. Or if he`s a die-hard sports fan, "paper" also works for sports tickets, etc.
Have fun with it - objects will get thrown on a shelf to collect dust but memories will last you a lifetime and make you stand out from those "generic gift-giving" girlfriends.
