Red Blotchy Nightmare

I feel all of your pain - I have had this FOREVER since I can remember looking in the mirror. There are millions of triggers and sometimes no trigger. I had it at my wedding, walked down the aisle looking like I was wearing a red shirt under my gown that spread up behind my ears and jaw. Lovely. However, it has gotten worse with age - it happens with any emotion whatsoever that is heightened; with a drop of alcohol, even if I stay out of light or heat, with spicy foods or just acidic foods, with headaches, with extreme heat or cold, with too much salt, in the sun ( even under an umbrella) - in any direct light at all as a matter of fact. I have normal blood pressure, normal health. I am pretty emotional, pretty stressed. I can`t go to bloomingdales because the spot lights make me red, hot and my hands swell. Can`t go anywhere where there is track lighting. I have just learned to live with this, to tolerate it, to explain it to others when i know it will happen. I just accept it - until recently. I was out with a collegue and rep having lunch. I ordered a grilled tuna steak and after eating it, proceeded to have the most aggressive flushing i have had to date. My mouth even got tingly and i was blood red up to my elbows, even into my scalp. Later that day someone swore it was an allergy to sulfites. Someone else, an allergy to seafood - all of a sudden! but i knew it was just more of the same, just worse. So I took a Benedryl; it went away in about an hour. That is the first time my blotchiness reacted to anything. (My dermotologist actually has had me on aldactone ( beta blocker) for 8 years and that has had 0 effect on it. It was prescribed in combo to birth control to regulate my hormones as she thought the problem was hormonal. It made my skin beautiful but i still reacted to light, heat, alcohol, spicy etc.) Most recently, i had another reaction about 2 weeks after the tuna incident - I just woke up one morning with major, MAJOR hives/acne on the right side of my face after having drinks with a friend the night before. Recognizing that the alcohol may have just been too much, that i may have just flushed for too long and brought out a new phase of it, i went straight to a stand-in dermo for an explanation-- I was HIDEOUS and had to work that week. I took off my baseball cap and he said it was an allergic reaction - to what? anyones guess. I hadn`t raied any new foods. I took Locoid cream - no help. Then i broke out again, not as severe on both sides of my face a week later. Finally went to my regular dermo last week and she said it was rosacea. I am on Doryx ( tetracycline) and Metrogel/Elidel cream 2x a day. It has gotten rid of most of the hive/acne but i still get the blotchiness which seems to aggravate it.

HERE IS MY QUESTION: has anyone with the blotchiness had these breakouts or reactions? help!!!, very desperate to find out what is happening to me. Has anyone been diagnosed with Rosacea as well at a young age who is not fair skinned? ( i am 31, medium skin). Also, have any of you been on Accutane? i am curious if this is a side effect ( years later...) any similar stories would be helpful and or experiences with this and food or otehr allergies.

Hi Stephanie,

I was on Accutane and have also been experiencing what you have described. I know how embarrassing it can be.

My blotchiness is aggravated by the sun, heat (especially exercise) and stress. My dermatologist prescribed some hydrocortisone cream which helped a little, but I am also worried about permanent damage.

I`m sure this isn`t that helpful, but you`re not alone. I was wondering the same thing about Accutane. I took it over 13 years ago but have been extremely sensitive since being on the drug.

Are you taking Metrogel for your rosacea? If so, and you are drinking alcohol (even in Cough syrup) STOP!. I just was very very sick for 4 weeks because of using Metrogel on my nose and drinking alcohol. I didn`t realize you can`t drink alcohol with Metrogel. Metrogel is really the drug flagyl (according to the specialist I saw the other day).. And IF you drink ANY alcohol with Metrogel, it will react like the drug that alcoholics take when if they drink with it, they get really ill. I was really really flushed for 2 years before I got very ill this January and I looked on the internet under Flagyl and alcohol and it listed that as one of the major symptoms of taking alcohol with it. My pharmacy, the tube nor the package for Metrogel..NONE of them listed this reaction. If you`re using Metrogel (or Metrocream I would presume) and drinking alcohol, stop drinking!
